The UK sets new wind power record
Thanks to the extreme weather, a new wind power record was set in the UK on Saturday 17th March, with the highest metered wind output ever recorded.
Data collected by Drax from the National Grid and Elexon revealed that wind power generation hit 14.3GW, beating the previous record of 13.8GW set at the start of the month.
Wind power generated over 35% of electricity in the UK on the day, with 20.3% from gas, 17.6% from nuclear and coal generating 12.9%.
Drax has reported that 2017 was the UK’s greenest year, with 50% of electricity generated by low-carbon sources and wind generation growing by 45%.
With 45 TWh of electricity generated (15 TWh of which was generated in a record Quarter 4), 15% of Britain’s electricity came from wind in 2017, up from 10% in 2016.
